The pillars in the Phoenix were severely burned in a fire. They were covered up with boards which were painted white. After removing the boards, each pillar was hand scraped to remove the charcoal. After sanding, two different stains were applied to enhance the color produced by the fire. Cracks were painted with artist's brushes to accentuate the black scars. Then 15 coats of clear finish were applied to each pillar to preserve it’s historic magnificence. The ceiling boards were removed one by one and numbered sequentially. Then the white paint was carefully removed. Each board was then stained to the original color, and replaced in numerical order. This one procedure required extraordinary effort by six dedicated men over a period of six weeks time. The effort their labor required is evident in the incredible result they achieved. |
